Tracking Global Patterns of Drought‐Induced Productivity Loss Along Severity Gradient

Droughts significantly impact land carbon uptake by reducing the gross primary productivity (GPP). Projections suggest an increase in severe and extreme droughts twenty-first century. Despite importance of on uptakes, it remains unclear about GPP responses under different drought severity its changes current climate changes. Using four state-of-the-science products, we showed that moderate (−1 ≤ SPEI < −1.5), (−1.5 −2), (SPEI −2) caused average 5%, 7%, 9% reductions, respectively, across globe during recent decades. Although mean reductions varied among observed similar spatial patterns. The increased along gradient, while sharpest increases were semi-arid grassland ecosystems.
